Abstract

438,987. Variable - speed gearing. McGILL, H., 42, Talbot Avenue, Canterbury, Bourke, Victoria, Australia. Aug. 27, 1934, No. 24666. Convention date, April 12. [Class 80 (ii)] An automatic variable - speed gear or torque converter comprises planet gears 11, Fig. 1, supported in a carrier 3 fast on the driving-shaft 2 and meshing with a sun gear 12 fast on a driven shaft 13. Each planet 11 is controlled by a separate system of eccentric masses 16, Fig. 5. Rigid with each planet 11 is a disc 14, Fig. 2, carrying a ring of pivots 17 upon which are jointed links 18 which are pivoted each to a weight 16. The weights 16 of each group are supported internally and externally in an annular track 21 in a member 22 which is carried by the planet-carrier 3 and is either rigidly secured thereto or, as shown, revolubly mounted at 23 on a pin 24 fast to the carrier 3. The axis of the track 21 is eccentric to its planet 11 and the eccentricity does not vary. During transmission, as the planets 11 turn on their own axles, the weights 16 close in and open out as they are carried round in the eccentric tracks 21. This continual mutual displacement of the weights resists the turning of the planets on their axes so that an elastic torque is applied to the driven wheel 12. Driving and driven shafts 2, 13 may interchange functions. Specification 422,432 is referred to.
