Abstract

272,644. Johnston, J., and Grayson, H. A. March 30, 1926. Variable-speed gearing is controlled automatically by a mass or fly-wheel k which is oscillated as it turns with driving and driven shafts a, b bv a crank or cranks h connected to planet gears d. The planet spindles f are supported in a oarrier e fast on the shaft a. The pinions d mesh with a sun gear c fast on the shaft b. Blocks i fitting over the cranks h are adapted to slide in substantially radial grooves m in the fly-wheel k. The inertia of the fly-wheel resists relative motion within the gearing so as to yield an elastic variable drive. The cranks act so as to accelerate the flv-wheel slowly and to decelerate rapidly, and to this end the grooves m may be curved formerly in the direction of rotation at their inner ends. The sun gear is preferably three times the diameter of the planet gear. Specifications 222,912, and 227,516, are referred to.
