Abstract

254,057. O'Connell, J., and K.err, H. H. May 11, 1925. Butter. - A rotary churn, more particularly intended for treating cream in the manufacture of butter comprises a horizontally arranged barrel 1 having an opening 3 in one end 14 which is supported by peripherally disposed bearings so that free access may be had to the inside of the barrel during its operation, the other end of the barrel being supported by an axially arranged shaft rotating in a fixed bearing. The end 14 is flanged at 13 to run on rollers 12 carried by rockers 5, Fig. 8, on shafts 6 on tne two sides of the barrel. Workers 59 within the barrel are operatively connected to an annular rack which is mounted on the axially arranged shaft and fitted with band-brake control; they may thus remain stationary or be caused to turn relatively to the barrel. Change-speed gearing is interposed between the driving-shaft and the barrel so that the barrel may be driven rapidly or slowly as desired. The driving-shaft 24 carries a fixed pulley 30, a loose pulley 31, and a pulley 32 upon a loose sleeve 33 carrying a pinion 34. and the belt 81 is shifted by fingers 52 upon a slide 50 which has rack teeth 53 in mesh with a pinion 54 on a shaft 55 provided with a hand-wheel 58. When the belt is on the pulley 30 a direct drive is imparted by a bevel-wheel 23 on the shaft 24 and the barrel is driven rapidly through the gearing 22, 19, 18, Fig. 4; if, in these circumstances, a brake band 71 has been tightened upon the flange 70 of an internally and externally toothed ring 67 in gear with pinions 66 on the shafts 61 of the workers, these workers are not turned. For slower movement of the barrel the belt 81 is shifted on to the pulley 32, and as this is being effected a projection 49, Fig. 6, on the slide 50 passes over the bend in a lever 46 so that under the influence of a weight 47 levers 45. 43 are actuated to slide along a clutch part 42, keyed to the shaft 24, into engagement with a clutch part 41 on a freely mounted pinion 40. The drive is then imparted to the shaft 24 and bevel-wheel 23 through the gearing 34, 35, 39, 40. In operation, the barrel is first rapidly rotated, and then as the butter is being formed the speed is reduced, and finally the workers are put into action by application of the brake 71 by the use of a hand-lever 78.
