Variable-speed gearing; clutches, friction and freewheel. - A two-speed gear for driving washing-machines comprises a one-way clutch or a centrifugal clutch between elements 10, 11, which is operative for the low speed, and overruns when a friction clutch 15 is engaged for the high speed or centrifuging drive. A motor 3, Fig. 1, drives a pulley 5 loose on the shaft 1 of the machine 2. A countershaft 7 carries gears meshing respectively with a gear 6 fast on the pulley 5 and with the gear 10. The clutch 15 is feathered on the shaft 1, and when a pedal 17 is depressed, the shaft 1 is accelerated by being .driven directly from the pulley 5. A one-way clutch to allow overrunning in one direction between the gear 10 and its boss 11 is described comprising spring-pressed balls in taper recesses in the outer member. Alternatively a centrifugally-released clutch which is operative for both directions of rotation may be used, such as is shown in Fig. 3. Weights 25 with grip ends 25<1> are pivoted upon arms 24 fast on the shaft 1. When the shaft 1 accelerates, the weights fly out and the part 10 driven at reduced speed is left behind. Instead of the spur reducing train shown, belt or friction gearing may be used. According to the Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 (3) (a) bevel or worm gearing may be alternatively used. This subjectmatter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
