Variable-speed epicyclic gearing comprises epicyclic trains in which a varying amount of internal friction is generated by centrifugal masses so as to vary the speed ratio automatically. The driving-shaft a carries a fast pinion a<1> and two loose sleeves c, d. The driven shaft b in a frame a<3> carries two different trains connecting the pinion a<1> to the sleeves c, d respectively so as normally to drive these sleeves together at the same speed as the shaft a. Centrifugal levers d<5>, d<6> carried by the sleeve d have spurs engaging arms c<2> secured to the sleeve c. The effect of rotation is to force a relative displacement of the sleeves c, d, which has the effect of jamming the teeth or the toothed trains together with an increasing amount of friction. Thus at a high speed the gearing turns solid. An overload by reducing the speed, causes slipping, and a reduced velocity ratio.
