455,713. Variable - speed gearing; friction clutches. STEVENS, A. H., 5, Quality Court, Chancery Lane, London.- (Borg-Warner Corporation; 310, South Michigan Avenue, Chicago, U.S.A.) March 23, 1935, No. 9154. [Class 80 (ii)] A vehicle transmission system comprises a reduction gear train and a hydraulic coupling F arranged in parallel between the propeller shaft 11 and a shaft 13, which latter is adapted to be connected to the engine shaft 10 by a centrifugal friction clutch C which engages at a predetermined engine speed and which may be disengaged manually at any time. The clutch C is similar to that described in Specification 422,443. The reduction gear train includes a oneway clutch, and the arrangement is such that at low speeds the shaft 11 is driven through the reduction gear train while at higher speeds the coupling F becomes effective to drive the shaft 11 direct, the one-way clutch then over-running. The annular impeller casing 90 of the coupling F is keyed to the shaft 13 and has a tubular extension 94 carrying a gear 110 which is in mesh with a countershaft gear 111 which drives other countershaft gears 117 and 118 through a one-way roller clutch 114. The turbine runner 91 of the coupling F is secured to a shaft 97 passing through the extension 94 and carrying a gear 133. A gear 123 splined on the shaft 11 is controlled by an arm 131. With the arm 131 in the position R, the gear 123 meshes with an idler gear 135 in mesh with gear 118, and the shaft 11 is driven reversely. With arm 131 in position N, gear 123 is free, and no drive is transmitted. With arm 131 in position F, gear 123 meshes with gear 117 and teeth 124 on gear 123 engage the teeth of gear 133. In this position, therefore, the coupling F and the reduction gear train 110, 111, 117, 123 are arranged in parallel. With arm 131 in position F<1>, the teeth 124 remain in engagement with gear 133 and teeth 122 on gear 123 mesh with wheel 111. In this position, therefore, a direct positive drive is transmitted.
