Abstract
192,420. Marks, E. C. R., (Goodman Manufacturing Co.). July 25, 1921. Variable-speed gearing.-In a side-cutting mining machine, the transmission gear consists of a variable speed mechanism 14, in connection with a worm 13 which is driven by a driving shaft 12, which comprises a sleeve 13<a>, upon which the worm is keyed, loosely mounted on a driven shaft 15 and provided at one end with a gear pinion 13<b> constituting the sun gear of the transmission device. Loosely mounted on the sleeve is an annular casing 69 having a friction band 14<a> on its periphery, and loosely mounted within said casing is provided a ring-shaped cage 70 carrying a plurality of planetary gears 71, mounted on pins 72, the pinion 73 having a larger pitch diameter than the pinion 74. Also provided within the casing 69 is an internal gear ring 75 keyed thereto, and a second ring 76 loosely mounted therein, the ring 76 having attached to it an end plate 77 held in position by a retaining ring 78 bolted to the casing 69. The high speed connection to the driven shaft 15 comprises an annular clutch ring 26, seated within the cage 70 and keyed thereto by keys 26<a>, which engage with a sliding clutch 25 feathered to the shaft 15, while the slow speed connection .takes place through the plate 77 which carries a clutch member 27 and the clutch 25, other speeds being obtained by operating the friction band 14a.
