Abstract
331,487. Thornycroft & Co., Ltd., J. I., and Thornycroft, T. March 26, 1929. Variable-speed epicyclic gearing.-An epicyclic gear box is arranged to give a high and low gear and a reverse of equal speed to the low. The driving-shaft 1 carries a fixed pinion a, and free pinions b, c on coaxial sleeves b<x>, c<x>, the sleeve b<x> having a flange 4 to which the driven shaft is bolted. The pinion a is of less diameter than c, which is less than b. A cage 8 carries planet wheels c<1>, a<1>, b<1> meshing with c, a, b, respectively and has a coned end-flange 8a with which a cone clutch 7, slidably keyed on the sleeve c<x>, may be brought into contact by the lever 10 for giving the direct solid drive. The outer periphery of the clutch 7 may be braked by the band 12, and the cage 8 may be braked by the band 13 for giving the indirect drive and reverse.
