Abstract
580,442. Variable-speed gearing. PRICKETT, T. C. Feb. 21, 1944, No. 3221. [Class 80 (ii)] A fluid coupling is combined with two groups of planetary gearing, each of which provides two or more speeds, one, a high-speed group, being arranged between the secondary member of the coupling and the final driven shaft and the other, a low-speed group, being adapted when required to drive the secondary member of the coupling positively from the primary coupling member. As shown, the primary member of the coupling (not shown) is connected to a flange 5 of a sleeve 20 carrying sun pinions 20A, 20B of a low-speed group of gears 9 which drives on to the shaft 6 of the secondary member of the coupling through a carrier member 11. Thus by operating brake bands 15 or 16 or a clutch (not shown) between members 21 and 22 two reduced speeds of the shaft 6 and a direct drive can be obtained from the primary member of the coupling. The shaft 6 then drives, through gear group 10, a final driven shaft 32, two more ratios and a direct drive being obtained by the operation of brake bands 17 or 18 or a clutch (not shown) between members 14 and 19. For the higher speed ratios the gear group 10 only is employed being driven by the shaft 6 through the fluid coupling, the gear group 9 being allowed to run idly by disengagement of its brake bands and clutch. A resilient or magnetic drive may be arranged between the primary member of the coupling and the flange 5.
