Abstract

[Class 7 (v)] In an engine starter in which a friction disc clutch 12, 13, tightened automatically by a pressure nut 7, is interposed between the starter shaft 1 and a pinion 10 longitudinally displaceable at will into mesh with the engine fly-wheel 17, a torsion spring 8 normally moves the nut 7 away from the friction discs. In order to cause the nut 7 to tighten the clutch when the pinion 10 is fully in mesh with the fly-wheel 17, the action of the spring 8 is overcome by a torque transmitted through the friction discs under the control of an auxiliary pressure member 20 dependent on the position of the pinion. As shown, the starter shaft 1 is driven through planetary gearing 4 from a fly-wheel 5 driven by an electric motor, the planet wheels 4 being carried by a drum 2 mounted on the shaft 1. The pressure nut 7 is threaded at 6 on the shaft 1, and the outer member 9 of the disc clutch carries a metal casing 18 having a flange 21 normally bearing against a ring 22 on the casing 3. With the parts in the position shown, the starter fly-wheel 5 is set in rotation and drives the shaft 1, but the disc clutch is inoperative and the member 9 is held at rest by the engagement between the flange 21 and ring 22. On moving the pinion 10 towards the engine fly-wheel, the flange 21 leaves the ring 22 and the cup 9 and pinion 10 are driven slowly from the drum 2 through a spring- pressed pin 23 bearing on the casing 18. When the pinion is fully in mesh with the engine fly-wheel, the disc clutch is brought into action by the pressure disc 20 carried by the casing 18, and is then tightened automatically by the nut 7.
