Abstract

865,557. Engine turning gear. PAPST, H. July 23, 1959, No. 25390/59. Class 7(5). In an engine starter drive for an engine having an associated starter motor/dynamo comprising a coupling nut operating in opposite directions for automatic change over from starter motor to dynamo operation, the coupling nut is provided with a radially expanding spring ring by which for starter motor operation it is caused to rotate on the screw thread and thus to exert pressure against a transmission disc, thereby coupling the disc to the engine, or when the engine is running is moved against a transmission disc connected to the motor/dynamo. When the engine is to be started the machine 2, serving as a starting motor, is energized and by way of the belt drive 3, 4, 5 and the gears 7b, 11 and 14 drives the member 6. The latter through the medium of the expanding ring 9 drives the coupling nut 8 which in consequence of its engagement with the thread 1c moves axially to the left and presses the member 6 against the flange 10. A friction coupling is thus produced between the member 6 and flange 10 and the crank-shaft 1 is set into rotation. On idling of the engine the coupling nut 8 retains the position shown. On acceleration the thread 1c causes the coupling nut 8 to be moved to the right so that the ring 9 and the coupling member 7 come into engagement by their conical surfaces. The crank-shaft then drives the machine 2 which then operates as a generator.
