Abstract

697,893. Turning-gear. STANLEY ENGINEERING CO., Ltd. April 16, 1952 [Jan. 9, 1952]. No. 673/52. Class 7 (v). In turning-gear for internal-combustion engines comprising a belt 11 for coupling the engine shaft 7 with a starter device, such as electric motor 5, the belt 11 passing round a driving pulley '9 adapted to move longitudinally in response to rotation of the motor 5 and a driven pulley associated with the engine shaft 7 and formed in two parts 12, 13, one of which parts 12 is freely mounted whilst the other part 13 is keyed to the engine shaft, it is arranged that the belt 11 moves from one pulley part 12 to the other part 13 in response to the longitudinal movement of the driving pulley 9 to effect turning of the shaft 7; the pulley part 13 may be formed on the engine flywheel 14. The engine supporting frame has the starter motor 5 mounted thereon with its driving shaft 6 parallel to the engine shaft 7, the shaft 6 having a threaded part 8 on which is mounted the internally-threaded driving-pulley 9. When'the shaft 6 is rotated the inertia of the pulley 9 causes it to move rightwardly thereby translating the belt 11 from pulley part 12 to part 13.
