Abstract

801,911. Engine turning gear. GENERAL MOTORS CORPORATION. Nov. 15, 1956 [Nov. 18, 1955], No. 34931/56. Class 7(5) In an electric starter apparatus in which the pinion is moved axially by one end of a pivoted lever the other end of which is connected to the armature of an electromagnet mounted adjacent the starter motor a single end housing member is secured to the field frame of the motor and formed with recesses so as to enclose the pinion and lever and close one end of both the motor and the electromagnet. As shown, end plates 14, 16 are secured at opposite ends of the field frame by bolts 18. The pinion 34 is driven from the motor shaft by means of an over-running clutch 36. The driven member may be either inside or outside of the clutch. Helical splines 40 are engaged by corresponding splines on the interior surface of a sleeve 38 and there is some rotation of the sleeve, clutch and pinion during axial movement toward the engine gear 32. Windings 72 and 74 are energized to effect movement of the pinion into mesh and also to close the starter motor switch (not shown). One of the windings is rendered ineffective when the switch is closed. De-energization of the electromagnet may be controlled-manually or automatically by engine suction or by the action of the generator. When the collar is moved to the left it engages a snap ring (not shown). The spring 60 is compressed and exerts a pressure on the armature 20 and moves it with the shaft 22 to the left. The washer 106 is engaged by a surface on the armature and the end plate 14 and acts as a brake to stop the motor. The enlarged head 98 of the link 100 has a flat surface 104 spaced from the end of the armature 76 and there is also some lost motion between the lever 42 and the pivot pin 102. The pivot pin 44 has an eccentric portion so that by rotating the pin the position of the lever 42 can be accurately adjusted from outside the housing.
