Abstract
456,856. Turning-gear. BOSCH AKT.- GES., R., 4, Militarstrasse, Stuttgart, Germany. Oct. 12, 1935, No. 28198. Convention date, Nov. 19, 1934. [Class 7 (v)] An engine starter is of the type in which a pinion d or other driven member movable into engagement with an engine member e is connected to a flywheel f or other driving member through a friction-disc clutch i which is brought into operation by an axially screwing nut m after the engagement of the members d, e and when the action of springs u on the nut m has been overcome. Each spring u is housed in the nut m and is adapted to move the nut away from the pressure plate o of the clutch, while a fixed stop y annuls the action of the springs on the member m when the pinion d is fully in mesh with the engine member e. As shown, the cup h of the disc clutch is driven from the starter fly-wheel f through planetary gearing g, and the stop y is an annular plate mounted on the cup h. The pinion d is formed on a sleeve a movable axially by means of a lever z. The discs of the clutch i are in engagement alternately with the cup h and with the nut m, which is threaded on the sleeve a and carries the pressure plate o bearing against a collar p. The springs u are interposed between bolts s, t arranged in bores r in the nut m, the bolts s normally bearing against the plate o and the bolts t each having a pin v extending through an opening in the end of the bore r. In operation, the fly-wheel f is set in rotation manually or by an electric motor. On moving the pinion d into mesh with the engine member e, the plate o comes into engagement with the disc clutch i and moves this and the nut m axially until the pins v engage the stop and the springs u are compressed. The clutch then transmits rotation from the fly-wheel f to the pinion d and is automatically tightened by the nut m until the engine starts and overruns the starter, whereupon the nut releases the disc clutch and the parts are returned to normal position.
