532,835. Turning-gear. BOSCH GES., R. Sept. 21, 1939, No. 26301. Convention date, Sept. 21, 1938. [Class 7 (v)] In an engine starter in which a starter pinion 16 on a sleeve 12 is connected to the shaft 11 of the starting motor by a friction clutch 18 tightened by a pressure member 17 threaded on the sleeve, which is displaced axially to engage the pinion with an engine member 41, the member 17 is rigidly held on the sleeve 12 by a locking member 31 until the pinion meshes with the member 41. As shown in Fig. 1, the pinion 16 is integral with the sleeve 12, which is moved axially by an electromagnet 44 acting through a rod 40, which has a collar 43 normally abutting against balls 33 in the end of the sleeve. The locking member 31 consists of balls, pins or the like normally held by an enlargement 42 of the rod 40 in engagement with recesses in the member 17. When the pinion is fully in mesh with the engine member 41, the enlargement 42 has moved past the balls 31, so that the member 17 is free to tighten the clutch under the action of the thread 14. The balls 33 in this position enter a groove 35 in the shaft 11 and a stop 47 on the rod 40 engages the end of the sleeve 12. In a modification, Fig. 3, the pinion 56 is integral with the outer member 57 of the friction clutch, the pressure member 55 of which is threaded on a sleeve 52 having an internal threaded connection with the starting-motor shaft 50. The locking ball 59 is normally held by the thread 51 of the shaft 50 in engagement with recesses in the member 55. Axial movement of the sleeve 52 and pinion 56 is effected by an electromagnet 66 through a lever 67 and a two-piece collar 65 slidable on the sleeve 52. The movement of the collar is transmitted to the sleeve through springs 70, 71. When the pinion 56 comes into mesh with the engine member, the ball 59 rides off the thread 51 and the pressure member 55 can tighten the clutch.
