Abstract

518,937. Turning-gear. BOSCH GES., R. (formerly BOSCH AKT.-GES., R.). Sept. 9, 1938, No. 26312. Convention date, Sept. 9, 1937. [Class 7 (v)] In an engine starter comprising a coupling member or pinion 12 moving axially on a threaded sleeve 11 into engagement with an engine member, one or more locking elements 17 are seated in the coupling member and in the engaged position of the coupling member are pressed into a recess 33 in the sleeve 11 by a spring-loaded cam ring 18. When a predetermined speed is reached, the locking elements are released by a centrifugal device acting upon the cam ring. As shown, the locking element 17 is a ball seated in 'an opening in an extension 15 of the pinion 12. The cam ring 18 slides on the extension 15 and has a recess 19 which receives the ball 17 in the inoperative position shown. A spring 21 is connected at 22 to the cam ring and at 23 to a bolt seated in a slot 27 in the cam ring. On the bolt 23 is mounted a centrifugal mass 24 connected at its free end by a strong spring 25 to a bolt 26 engaging the slot 27 in the cam ring. An entraining ball 28 on the mass 24 projects into a recess 29 in the cam ring. In operation, when the pinion moves axially into mesh with an engine member, the ball 17 moves into the recess 33 and is held there by the cam ring, which is turned about its axis by the spring 21. When the engine starts and a sufficient speed is reached, the mass 24 swings outwards, the element 28 moving over the edge 30 of the recess 29 and so turning the cam ring back until the recess 19 registers with, and releases, the ball 17.
