Abstract

507,914. Turning. - gear. BOSCH GES., R. Dec. 22, 1937, No. 35453. Convention date, Dec. 22, 1936. [Class 7 (v)] In an engine starter in which a pinion b is longitudinally displaceable on the starter shaft a under the control of a manually operable lover n and a spring s, displacement of the lever n moves an intermediate member d into an operative position, where it is held relatively to the lever, and at the same time compresses the spring s; on release of the lever, the displacement of the member d and the pinion as a unit to bring the pinion into engagement with the engine is effected by the compressed spring alone. As shown, the lever n engages a coupling element f connected by a pin-and-slot to the member d, which is pivoted upon an annular member c carried by the pinion. A centrifugal weight e is pivoted on the axis of the member d and the parts are normally held by springs g, s, k in the positions shown. In operation, movement of the lever n as indicated by the arrow displaces the element f to compress the spring s, and the member d is rocked so that its lower end moves across the vertical plane of the pivot. On releasing the lever n, the element f and the pinion are moved axially by the spring s to mesh the pinion with an engine member, the members f, d being retained in their relative position by the spring g. A part t of the pinion operates the starter switch q. When the engine starts, the member d is rocked into its initial position by the centrifugal weight e, thus drawing the pinion out of mesh.
