Abstract

730,301. Starting oil engines. SIMMS MOTOR UNITS, Ltd. Sept. 2, 1953 [Sept. 4, 1952], No. 22301/52. Class 7(3). In a fuel injection pump having a control rod 1, normally controlled by a governor and movable by a hand control lever 2 to cut off the fuel supply, means are provided for temporarily increasing the fuel supply at starting above the normal maximum supply, the latter means being actuated by the hand lever 2 which is both rotatable and movable in the direction of the axis of its spindle 8 and is so arranged that the excess fuel supply means can only be brought to the operative condition following actuation of the hand control lever 2 to the cut-off position. The hand control lever 2 has fixed on its spindle 8 a lever 5 carrying a spring-loaded stop 7 which normally rests against a stop 16 in the dotted line position of Fig. 3 in which it engages the end of the rod 1 to limit the normal maximum fuel supply. When the lever 2 is rotated to cut off the fuel, the lever 5 moves to a position clear of a stop 18, Fig. 3, so that it can be moved transversely of the rod 1 by pulling lever 2 outwards against a spring 14 to allow the stop 7 to engage in a step 3 in the end of the rod 1, Fig. 3, whereby on release of the lever 2 the rod 1 can be moved by its governor spring to an excess supply position in which its end contacts the stop 16, Fig. 6. When the engine has started the rod 1 is moved away from the stop 16 by the governor and the stop 7 is moved back to its normal position between the stop 16 and the end of the lever 1 by a spring 19, further movement of the lever 5 transversely of the rod 1 to set the stop 7 to engage the step 3 being prevented by the stop 18 until the lever 5 has been rotated to the cut-off position.
