Abstract

833,771. Starting fuel injection engines. RUSTON & HORNSBY Ltd. Oct. 9, 1957 [Nov. 3, 1956], No. 33608/56. Class 7(3) The movement of a governor rod 15, Fig. 1, controlling a fuel injection pump control rod 13, in the increased fuel supply direction is limited during normal running by a stop 17 against which a collar 20, transmitting the force of the main loading spring 23 to the rod 15, abuts a weaker spring 14 serving to move the rod 15 relative to collar 20 beyond the normal maximum supply position to a starting position when the governor is stationary or rotating at starting speed. The spring 23 acts through lever 24 on the collar 20 which normally abuts shoulder 21 on the rod 15 but which is slidable relative to the rod 15 through a distance limited by a circlip 22 which determines the starting supply position of the rods 13, 15. When, due to increased load, the engine speed decreases, rod 15 is moved to the right until at idling speed collar 20 contacts stop 17. At idling speed the force of the governor 16 is sufficient to overcome spring 14 but when the engine is stationary or rotates at starting speed, below idling speed, spring 14 overcomes the governor force and moves rod 15 to the right to the excess supply function in which circlip 22 contacts collar 20. After starting the governor 16 moves member 15 back until it contacts collar 20 and comes under the control of the main spring 23. In a modification, Fig. 4, the rod 15 is replaced by a sleeve 25 on the end of which a cap 26 serves the function of the circlip 22. The stop 17 is also replaced by an adjustable stop 28 cooperating with the lever 24 and the force of spring 14 is applied through a lever 27.
