Abstract

685,899. Speed governors. GENERAL MOTORS CORPORATION. April 9, 1951 [April 22, 1950], No. 8136/51. Class 57 [Also in Group XXVII] A control system for an internal combustion engine includes a pedal 29 that controls the throttle 14 of the inlet to the blower B and also a rod 12 that varies the amount of fuel injected and in addition a diaphragm 90 that is subjected to the pressure adjacent the throttle 14 and moves the rod 12 to control the speed of the engine. The pedal 29 is connected to a lever 34 that is fixed to the shaft 27 which also carries a rotatable lever 26 that is connected by the rod 21 to the throttle 14 and is loaded by a spring 19. A projection 39 on the lever 26 is pressed against the lever 34 by a torsional spring 36 so that the lever 34 follows the movements of the lever 26. A cam 40 is fixed to the shaft 27 and engages a pin 51 to raise and lower a rod 46 connected to the bell crank 50 secured to the shaft 52 that also carries a lever 60 fitted with an adjustable spring 78. The diaphragm 90 is connected by a rod 94 to a lever 64 that engages a pin 74 on the rod 12; the lever 64 is loaded by a torsional spring 70 to move towards and engage the lever 60 and increase the amount of fuel injected. When pedal 29 is moved to close the throttle 14 to idling speed, the lever 60 is positioned relatively to the lever 64 so that the spring 78 is within the path of the additional arm 83 formed on the lever 64 so that when the pressure in the venturi 22 is reduced due to increased engine speed, the diaphragm 90 moves the lever 64 clockwise and the spring 78 provides additional loading to its movement to obtain a steady idling speed. When the pedal 29 is depressed to open the throttle 14, the spring 78 is moved from the path of the arm 83 and if the engine speed exceeds a maximum value, the diaphragm 90 acts against the loading spring 70 only to reduce the fuel supply.
