Abstract

1,274,739. Speed governors. SOC: INDUSTRIELLE GENERALE DE MECANIQUE APPLIQUEE. Sept. 19, 1969 [Sept. 20, 1968; March 25, 1969], No. 46250/69. Heading G3B. Excess smoke during starting of an I. C. engine is prevented by a regulator comprising a centrifugal governor 1 which moves a pump rack 19 via an arm 20 connected to a sleeve 4 moveable axially with respect to a shaft 2 by the governor 1 against the action of an "excess flow spring" 5, "high-speed spring" 13, and an "idling spring" 14, a socket 10 axially moveable on a guide rod 8 and a stop member 32 slideable thereon with a spring 29 disposed therebetween, a lug 39 carried by the sleeve 4, and a lever 30 pivoted at 31 with an end 38 acted upon by the lug 39 and a forked end 36 coacting with the end 37 of the rack 19. In operation, to start the engine, the lever 30 is rotated anti-clockwise to disengage the end 36 from the flanged end 37 of the rack. The rack 19 is set to the maximum flow position by a spring 22. The engine accelerator is depressed to rotate a cam 15 clockwise to compress springs 5, 13 and 14 to the maximum and the engine is started. As the engine picks up speed it moves the rack to reduce the fuel supply until a shoulder 12 on the sleeve 4 contacts a flange 34 on the stop 32. The lever 30 is then released and a spring 40 moves the end 36 into contact with the end 37 and moves the rack until the end 38 contacts the lug 39. With the cam in the high-speed position the engine speed continues to increase. The spring 29 is calibrated to yield when the engine reaches idling speed. Above this speed the sleeve 4 acts to compress the spring 29 without moving the socket 10 until the flange 34 contacts a flange 35. In Figs. 9 to 14 (not shown) a sleeve (4b) contacts a ring (10a) at idling speed when a spring (5a) has been compressed.
