A centrifugal speed governor for internal combustion engines working with direct fuel injection has a carrier 2 attached to an enginedriven shaft 1 and carrying governor weights 4 adapted axially to displace a sleeve 6 which is slidably mounted on the carrier 2 by an axially narrow bearing zone 7 and pivotally connected with a lever 10. The latter is pivotally mounted on a pin 11 and connected by a pin 31 with a lever 33 pivoted at 34, loaded by a light spring 40 and connected by a link 37 with the control rod 16 of a fuel-injection pump. A third lever 45 is also pivoted on the pin 11 and is normally held against an adjustable stop 49 by a stiff spring 25 anchored for adjustment purposes to a screwoperated lever 46 and supported by a lever 18 which is connected to a lever 20 located outside the governor casing so that the inclination of the lever 18 and hence the loading exerted by the spring 25 on the lever 45 may be varied. In operation, the movement of the sleeve 6 is at first opposed only by the spring 40, until it has been displaced by a distance c to engage a spring-loaded bolt 54. During a further displacement d, the fuel supply is gradually reduced until the sleeve abuts the lever 45 when further movement is opposed by the spring 25 and a state of equilibrium is produced. For regulation at a lower speed, the lever 18 is pivoted in a clockwise direction and the spring 25 opposes the movement of the sleeve 6 before the stop bolt 54 has been displaced by the distance d. A spring 60 engages the lever 45 under no-load conditions to ensure smooth running. When the lever 20 is pivoted into contact with a stop member (not shown), projections 62 on the lever 18 move the lever 10 together with the lever 45 so that the control rod adopts its stop position.
