Abstract

821,739. Speed governors. VYZKUMNY USTAV NAFTOVYCH MOTORU, and ZAPLETAL, M. May 2, 1957 [May 3, 1956], No. 14094/57. Class 57. A speed-regulating system for internalcombustion engines comprises a first mechanism A transmitting the motion of a centrifugal governor to the control rod of a fuel injection pump 16, a second mechanism B for adjusting the governor loading and a third mechanism C, operatively associated with the first and second mechanisms, for varying the quantity of fuel delivered and controlled by means operable by the second mechanism so that the fuel supply varies from a maximum value at starting to a minimum value at minimum engine speed and then back to the maximum value at maximum engine speed. The governor is loaded by a spring 4 adjustable by a rod 9 through a lever 8, rod 7, lever 6 and rod 5 and the movement of the governor sleeve 3 is transmitted to the pump 16 through a system of levers including a lever 11 pivoted on a pivot 11<1> movable by a rod 17 loaded by a spring 21. A pivoted lever 27 is loaded by a spring 28, having an initial loading greater than that of spring 21, and has abutments 27<1> and 29<1> co-operable with abutments 17<1> and 30<1> respectively on the rod 17 and on a rod 30 pivotally connected to one end of a pivoted arm 33 whose other end is pivotally connected to a rod 31 connected to an extension 23 of the lever 8. An abutment 23<1> is adjustably mounted on the end of the extension 23. The position shown in Fig. 2 corresponds to maximum fuel delivery at engine starting, the abutment 30<1> holding the lever 27 in one extreme position so that it allows the rod 17 to be urged by spring 21 to its upper limit. Downward movement of the rod 9 increases the governor loading and allows the lever 27 to move clockwise under the influence of spring 28 and the abutment 271 presses the rod 17 downward against the action of spring 21 to gradually decrease the fuel supply until, as shown in Fig. 3, the abutment 23<1> contacts an element 26 secured to the lever 27. In this position the fuel supply and engine speed are both at a minimum. Further downward movement of the rod 9 causes the lever 27 to move in the opposite direction against the spring 28 and allows the rod 17 to be moved up by the spring 21 thereby increasing the fuel supply with increase of engine speed until it reaches a maximum at maximum speed. The engine may be stopped by manual operation of the rod 17 against the spring 21.
