Abstract

978,138. Regulating I.C. engines. GES. FUR LINDE'S EISMASCHINEN A.G. Nov. 20, 1962 [Nov. 20, 1961], No. 43784/62. Heading F1B. [Also in Division G3] In an I.C. engine fuel injection pump control system, having centrifugally-movable elements 8, Fig. 2, connected to the pump adjusting element through a movable control member 3 spring-loaded by a main loading spring 23 effective above a predetermined low engine speed and by a supplementary spring 4, the loading of the main spring is adjustable to vary the engine speed, the supplementary spring is operative at speeds up to the predetermined speed to set the pump at maximum delivery and a lostmotion linkage 13, 14 is effective between the control member 3 and spring 23 only when the engine speed is below the predetermined speed. On starting, weights 8, governor sleeve 6 and control lever 3 are in the position shown in Fig. 2, and since pin 14 is not in contact with the lower wall of hole 13, spring 23 does not influence reaction lever 12 or control lever 3. With increasing speed, weights 8 are forced outwardly and move sleeve 6 to the right to pivot governor levers 11, reaction lever 12 and control lever 3 to reduce the rate of fuel injection. After the lower wall of hole 13 contacts pin 14, further movement compresses spring 23 between abutment 24 and the end of an adjustable sleeve 21, until a balanced state is achieved. Speed is increased by pivoting spindle 27 so that pin 26 forces sleeve 21 downwards to increase the bias loading of spring 23. With large speed reductions, shoulder 16 contacts a plate spring 18 which acts in opposition to spring 23 so that lever 3 takes up a position giving an increased fuel injection rate. Spindle 27 is pivoted so that adjusting sleeve 19 is moved upwardly to set lever 3 to zero delivery thus stopping the engine. A stop pin (not shown on Fig. 2) limits movement of sleeves 19 and 21. In a modification spring 4 is replaced by a torsional coil spring attached to shaft 5.
