Abstract

1,195,318. Heating engine charges; starting diesel engines. KLOCKNER-HUMBOLT-DEUTZ A.G. July 1, 1968 [Aug.31, 1967], No.31400/68. Heading F1B. In a fuel injection engine having a pre-combustion device 12 for burning fuel in the air induction pipe 13 to heat the air, the fuel supply to the device 12 is increased with increase of engine speed. The supply pipe 10 for the device 12 is branched off the main feed pipe 8 between an engine driven priming pump 5 and the injection pump 3 at a point upstream of a constriction 9, whereby the supply to pipe 10 varies with engine speed. The device 12 comprises a glow plug and the pipe 10 includes a solenoid actuated shut-off valve 14. Movement of a starter switch 18 first closes contact 19 to energize the glow plug 12 and then closes the contacts of the starter motor 20 and of the circuit of valve 14 to supply fuel to the device 12. When the engine has started switch 18 is released and switch 22 closed to keep the circuits of the devices 12, 14 closed and to energize solenoid 23 to move a pin 24 into the path of the injection pump control rod 25 to reduce the maximum fuel supply position while the device 12 is operative. A return pipe 15, branched from the pipe 8 downstream of the constriction 9, contains a spring-loaded valve 16 or a rectriction. In Fig. 2 (not shown) the pin 24 is replaced by a switch (26) which is opened to close the valve 14 when the control rod 25 is moved to full load position.
