Abstract

932,025. Intake air preheaters. BENDIX CORPORATION. Nov. 10, 1961 [Dec. 7, 1960], No. 40273/61. Class 7(3). In an engine intake air preheater unit adapted for connection to an air inlet conduit of an internal combustion engine to discharge heated gas therein between the air inlet end and the engine, the unit comprising a combustion chamber having a closed end and an open end communicating with the conduit, a fuel spray nozzle mounted in the wall of the combustion chamber for discharging fuel therein and a spark ignition device disposed within the combustion chamber forwardly of the spray nozzle in the path of fuel issuing from the nozzle for igniting the fuel air mixture in the combustion chamber, the open end of the combustion chamber is attached at an opening in the air inlet conduit and the spray nozzle is mounted in the combustion chamber wall so as to be inclined downwardly and forwardly in the direction of the air flow in the conduit and to discharge its spray generally forwardly and through the opening in the conduit toward the axis of the latter. The preheater is particularly useful with diesel engines and may be employed to advantage with multi-fuel diesel engines. As shown a fuel supply line 96 fed by gravity from a sump (not shown) has a filter 97 interposed therein. The fuel pump 19 which is driven by an electric motor 110 delivers fuel to a control unit 15. The unit 15 includes a manually operated fuel control valve and a control switch 14 which not only controls the positioning of the valve but selectively energises the motor 110 of the fuel pump and a high tension ignition unit 112. Fuel under pressure is delivered from the outlet port 102 of the valve, when the latter is open, through the pipe 31 to the spray nozzle 26. The fuel return pipe 32 is connected to the unit 15 and the fuel returns to the sump through a pipe 105. The turbo blower 12 will be started before or at least simultaneously with the closing of the switch 14.
