Abstract

897,647. Regulating; fuel injection systems; treating charge. SENCKEL, K. June 11, 1958, No. 18612/58. Classes 7(2), 7(3), 7(4) and 7(6). [Also in Groups XXVIII and XXXV] In a spark ignition fuel injection engine having a piston type injection pump whose piston speed is independent of engine speed, the end of injection is made to coincide with ignition and the commencement of injection is varied in dependence upon engine speed and load. In Figs. 5 and 6 the injection pump 26 is operated by an electromagnet 25 and forms a unit with the fuel injector 68 provided with cooling fins 65. The pump piston 26 is connected to an armature actuated by a coil 24 which is surrounded by a secondary coil 27 forming the ignition coil connected to spark plug 28, the plug being operated by the surge of current when the circuit of coil 24 is broken by a cam operated switch 14 at the end of injection. The pump has a main working space 61 feeding fuel to the injector and a second working space 60 which injects lubricating oil and leakage fuel through a pipe 76 into the intake manifold. The cam 5 Fig. 1, has control edges 6, 7, controlling respectively the beginning and end of injection by co-operation with the contact arm 9 which is movable axially of the cam by the accelerator pedal 21 so that the beginning of injection is advanced as the accelerator is depressed, the control edge 7 being also slightly inclined so that the end of injection and the ignition are simultaneously slightly advanced. The cam 5 is also movable by a centrifugal governor 3. In Fig. 6 the end of injection is controlled at low speeds through a switch 64 by a two-part cam 70 actuated so that the two parts are aligned at low speeds and angularly displaced with respect to one another at increasing speeds. The pump stroke is varied by cams 72, operated from pedal 21, which vary the position of the plunger 26.
