Abstract

823,390. Compression ignition engines; starting. MASCHINENFABRIK AUGSBURG-NURNBERG A.G. Feb. 15, 1956 [March 1, 1955], No. 4711/56. Classes 7(3) and 7(6) ln a compression ignition internal combustion engine, more particularly a high speed diesel engine, in which an ignition accelerator is introduced into the delivery path of the fuel, preferably during the starting and running up state, the ignition accelerator used is lubricating oil which is taken from the lubricating oil circuit of the engine and automatically added to the fuel inside the fuel injection pump, for instance in the suction chamber of this pump. As shown a feed pump 4 supplies the injection pump 2 by way of a filter 6. A hand pump 7 can draw either from a container 13 which contains an ignition accelerator or from the lubricating oil circuit. In the latter case the pump 7 is preferably connected to the oil sump of the engine as indicated at 14. The delivery of the pump is connected by the pipe 15 to the suction chamber of the pump 2. Alternatively the ignition accelerating lubricating oil can be injected by the pump 7 by way of branch pipes 17 or 18 selectively or in combination also into the fuel pipe 5 and/or into the filter 6. In order if required to be independent of the hand pump provision is further made to connect the lubricating oil circuit at a place where it is under pressure directly with the points 16, 5, 6. For this purpose pipe 15 is connected by a pipe 19 to the lubricating oil pressure circuit and a valve 21 is provided which may be actuated by hand and also automatically. The valve is made dependent on the temperature or the speed of the engine. With temperature control the valve opens automatically when the engine is cold. The valve may be controlled by electric or electromechanical means or thermostats. The hand pump and lubricating oil pressure circuit may be brought into use jointly or selectively separately. If ignition failures occur at high speeds the hand pump can be controlled by electric or electrooperation only in the region of high speeds of revolution and connect the suction chamber of the fuel pump with the lubricating oil circuit or the container 13. As ignition accelerators nitrates may be used. The pump plungers may open a connecting bore or groove for the passage of lubricating oil only when the plungers are moved into their position for injection of the starting charge. This lubricating oil may come from the lubricating oil circuit of the pump plunger.
