Abstract
583,880. Engine turning-gear. BENDIX AVIATION CORPORATION. June 19, 1945, No. 15584. Convention date, June 22, 1944. [Class 7 (v)] Engine turning-gear comprises a screwed power shaft 2 carrying a sliding pinion 6 movable into and out of mesh with an engine gear 7 and connected through an over-running clutch 15, 18, with a nut 9 coacting with the screw the latter being surrounded by a circular latch which is inoperative in the normal concentric position on the screw and which is movable to an eccentric position to the lock the pinion in mesh until the engine becomes self-operative. The movement of the pinion into gear is limited by thrust washers 8 adjacent a shoulder 3. The nut 9 is flanged and surrounded by a barrel 11 connected at one end to a screw-protecting thimble 14, driving clutch member 15 and a thimble 21 which encloses a spring urging the driven clutch member 18, secured to the pinion, into engaged position. A spring-urged latch member 24 is slidable radially on the nut on studs 25-27 and has a locking tooth 36, Fig. 2, coacting with a notch 37 on the land of the thread when the nut is in pinion-engaging position. A radially movable sleeve 38 is telescopically mounted on the latch ring and coacts with a trip 41 to restore the latch to concentric position, this being effected either manually or automatically as described in Specification 570,465. The driving torque is transmitted through a resilient block 13 enclosed in the barrel 11. In operation energization of shaft 2 causes the pinion to move into meshing position, the subsequent rotation of the nut being transmitted through the block 13. When the engine fires the release of the torque on the drive permits the nut to be moved back to a position where the latch is engaged by springs 30 and further backward movement prevented. The clutch 15, 18 is disengaged so that the pinion 6 overruns its shaft. If the engine now stalls the shaft 2 overtakes the pinion and cranking is resumed until the engine becomes self-operative whereupon the starting motor is stopped and the latch disengaged by the trip 41 so that the nut can overrun the shaft 2 and disengage the pinion.
