Abstract

567,440. Turning-gear. BENDIX AVIATION CORPORATION. July 19, 1943, No. 11745. Convention date, July 15, 1942. [Class 7 (v)] In an engine starter drive including a nut 6 threaded on a screw shaft 2, a pinion 7 journalled on the nut and movable thereby into and out of mesh with an engine gear 8, and an abutment 9 on the shaft 2 for arresting the meshing movement of the pinion, the nut and pinion have clutch teeth 12, 13 closed by the longitudinal pressure of the nut on the pinion. As shown, the shaft 2 is journalled on the power shaft I and driven through a spring 3. A spring 16 holds the clutch teeth in initial engagement and prevents drift of the pinion from the idle position. The return of the pinion from meshing position is prevented during the cranking operation by a centrifugal latch 14 normally retracted by a spring 15.
