Turning-gear. - In an electric starter of the screwed-pinion type for motor-vehicle engines, rotation of the pinion is restrained by a solenoidcontrolled friction device during the meshing operation. In one form, Fig. 3, brake blocks g carried by a fixed member h are thrust into engagement with a hollow extension c of the screwed pinion b by a plunger d engaging thrust-pins i. The plunger d is actuated by a solenoid f, which preferably acts as a resistance in series with the starting-motor, and may be cut out by the pinion b striking a switch when fully in mesh with the engine member k. In modifications, the friction device engages the outer face of the extension c, or the periphery of the pinion itself.
