Turning - gear. - In an electric starter in which the engagement of an axiallymoving pinion is facilitated by giving the pinion an axial to-and-fro motion and a slight angular motion if its teeth clash with those of the fly-wheel, a current reversing switch for the starting motor is controlled in dependence on the to-andfro motion of the pinion shaft. As shown, the pinion R has a threaded shaft in engagement with a sleeve Z driven through a laminated friction coupling L from a sleeve W carrying the motor armature A. A reversing switch V for the motor comprises spring contact-pieces P, Q, S, T, which engage contacts G, K in the inoperative position shown in Fig. 1. On closing the circuit of an electromagnet 0 by means of a switch Y, the switch V is moved into the position shown in Fig. 3, closing the circuit of the field coils F and armature A through contacts N, M. The pinion R moves axially and, if its teeth clash with those of the fly-wheel, the sleeve Z screws backwards, acting through a sleeve H to compress springs B, C and to move the switch V into the reversing position, in which the contacts P, T engage the contacts K, G and the contacts Q, S engage the contacts D, E. The motor being reversed, the sleeve Z moves forward again, the pinion R being given a slight rotary movement into meshing position. The spring B then throws the pinion into mesh with the fly-wheel, the switch V being thrown back into the position shown in Fig. 3, and starting is effected. The switch V may be operated by purely mechanical or purely electrical means.
