Abstract
384,739. Starting prime movers. LOUETTE, J. E. O., 77, Boulevard de Maisons, Poissy, Seine-et-Oise, France. Oct. 9, 1931, No. 28140. Convention date, March 14. [Class 38 (iv).] In an electric starter in which the motor armature 128 moves axially to bring the pinion 2 into mesh with the engine gear 8a, a single pair of brushes 52, 53 co-operates with the collector ring 112 of the armature, which has an insulating extension 111 on which the brushes rest in the inoperative position shown. The brushes are connected in parallel with field windings 119, 121 in series with windings 124, 126 and a battery 40 through a simple make-and-break switch 80. On closing the switch 80, the current through the field windings moves the armature axially, bringing the pinion 2 into mesh and bringing the collector ring 112 under the brushes 52, 53, when the windings 119, 121 are in shunt across the armature. The pinion 2 has a projection engaging a helical groove 114 in the armature shaft 1a, so that the pinion moves axially against a spring 115 if its teeth clash with those of the gear 8a and is turned by the helical connection until the teeth come into register.
