Abstract
476,776. Starting prime movers. BOSCH AKT.-GES., R. Sept. 22, 1936, No. 25685. Convention date, Sept. 24, 1935. [Class 38 (iv)] In starting-apparatus for internal-combustion engines in which several electric starting motors receive their main current only when all are coupled to the engine, the circuits which effect the coupling are switched on electro-magnetically under the sole control of a hand switch. In the arrangement shown in the Figure, the armatures of the two starter motors 1, 2 move axially and rotate slowly to engage pinions 21, 22 with the fly-wheel gear ring 23, when current is supplied from battery 24 through auxiliary exciting windings 5, 6. As soon as both pinions are in gear, starting current is supplied through the main exciting windings 3, 4. When the starter switch 25 is first closed, the movement of electromagnetic switches 7, 8 is limited by trip levers 17, 18 so that the bridge members 11, 12 engage only contacts 13, 14 and current is only supplied to auxiliary winding 6. When engagement of the corresponding pinions 22 is effected, lever 18 is tripped by disc 20 on the armature shaft, and the bridge member 12 engages both of its contacts so that bridge 11 and auxiliary winding 5 of the other starter motor are supplied with current from the battery. As soon as pinion 21 is engaged and lever 17 tripped, bridge 11 makes full contact with contacts 13, 15 and the full starting current is supplied to both motors. In a modification, the switch members 11, 12, when fully engaged, energize a relay switch by which the full current is supplied. In a further modification, two such switches, one for each starter motor, are provided. When starter pinions slidable on the armature shafts are employed, contacts closed thereby complete, through relays, the main starting circuits. If separate exciting windings are dispensed with, a resistance in series with each field is cut out only when both motors are engaged.
