Abstract
456,056. Starting prime movers. MAINUD STARTER, Ltd., 461A, Caledonian Road, London, BURGE, H. O., Martins, Crossways, Shenfield, Essex, and MOGRIDGE, R. J., 27, St. George's Square, Regents Park, London. Jan. 30, 1935, Nos. 3043, 3969, and 3970. [Class 38 (iv)] Relates to an electrical starter system for an I.C. engine, in which the motor armature is movable axially to bring a pinion into mesh with a gear on the armature shaft and consists in the provision of means to reduce the motor torque during meshing together with means to enable an alternative D.C. or A.C. supply to be used when the gearing is fully meshed. Closure of the press-button switch 59 energizes relays 14 and 43 from the battery 30. Relay 43 connects the armature 2 in series with a field 9 across the battery so that the armature rotates at reduced torque during meshing of the gear 12. When the armature has moved to the fully meshed position a collar 13 moves a lever 23 to open circuit the relay and also to release the relay 14 so that the circuit through the motor armature and field 8 for normal running is completed. The supply for normal running may be either from the battery 30 from an A.C. supply 31 through a transformer 35, a change-over switch 40 being provided. The contact arm of the relay 14 is pivoted so that when the relay is energized and the arm 25 is restrained by the lever 23 only contacts 17, 18 close. This connects a shunt field winding 7 across the battery when the switch 40 is in the position shown. A relay 54 closes the A.C. circuit when the press-button switch 59 is closed. The shunt field winding 7 may be omitted. A time-overload cut-out 50 is provided.
