Abstract
100,197. British Westinghouse Electric & Manufacturing Co., (Assignees of Gysel, M. E.). March 24, 1915, [Convention date]. Turning-gear.-An electric motor has a pinion 12 on the armature shaft 9 which is brought into gear with teeth 2 on the engine fly-wheel 1 by sliding the armature shaft axially. The shaft 9 is free to slide in the armature 5 and is displaced axially, at starting, by an electro-magnet 14 in series with the armature and the field windings 4. The pinion is normally held out of gear by a spring 17. If the current to the motor is not switched off when the engine starts under its own power, the pinion 12 is disengaged automatically owing to the increase in the back electromotive force of the motor.
