Abstract
143,324. Gill, F. J. Feb. 21, 1919. Turning-gear.-In an electric starter in which the motor armature A is shifted axially by the field coils B or by an electro-magnet to bring it into driving engagement with the engine, a resistance M is initially in series with the field coils or magnet and the armature circuit is broken; the axial movement completes the armature circuit through the commutator and cuts out the resistance. In the form shown, the commutator A<2> is provided with an insulating-sleeve F and a conducting-ring G. In the disengaged position shown, the insulator F breaks the armature circuit, and the ring G and brushes H complete the circuit of the field coils through the resistance M. When the axial movement of the armature brings the pinion into mesh with a gear-wheel E connected to the engine, the armature circuit is completed through brushes A<3>, and the resistance M is disconnected at the brushes H.
