Abstract
143,068. Henn, S. T., and Rushmores, Ltd. June 16, 1919. Turning-gear.-Relates to electric starters of the kind having a normally decentred armature which is drawn axially by an electro-magnetic device, such as the field magnet, to effect driving engagement with the engine and. when the engine fires, is returned to the disengaged position by a spring. According to the invention, a holding-magnet is provided to prevent the armature from being returned to the disengaged position if the switch is kept closed. In the construction. shown, the armature shaft A, carrying the commutator H and an iron ring N, slides axially inits bearings and is held in the engaged position by a magnet comprising a core M<1> and a winding M<2>. The winding is closed by the starting-switch J, but is not in series with the armature winding. Either the core M' or the iron ring on the armature shaft may be rotatable.
