955,838. Starting prime movers. FIAT S.p.A. Dec. 15, 1960 [Dec. 18, 1959], No. 43247/60. Heading H2H. In order to prevent the operation of an internal combustion engine starter motor M when the engine is running the circuit to the starter motor relay E is interrupted by the opening of the controls 5, 6, the latter being mounted on an armature 7 subjected to the fluxes in cores 2 and 3 respectively, the armature being biased towards the contact 5 and the windings 4, 11 being arranged so that with the engine stopped and the flow of current to the relay E from the battery B when the starter switch C shorts back its otherwise open contacts then the contacts 5, 6 are kept closed, but with the opening of the switch C, when the engine has started, the cessation of current thrusts the winding 4, and the build up of current through the winding 11 of the core 3 connected to the vehicle generator G, then the armature is attracted towards the core 3 and the contacts 5, 6 opened so that the circuit to relay E can not again be completed until the engine is stopped, the winding 11 de-energized and the contacts 5, 6 closed. The force exerted by core 2 on the armature 7 is such that while relay current flows through the winding 4, the core 3 is ineffective and thus armature movement towards core 3 can only take place when the switch C is opened, interrupting the current to winding 4. The switch C has three positions, thus all contacts open, both contacts closed, one contact closed; and it is arranged that from the initial " off" position, the second position closes both contacts and when the switch C is released and the engine has started, then one switch contact remains closed. The battery B is connected to the winding 11 through a resistor 14 so that when the switch C is in its second or third positions, then core 3 will exert an attracting force on the armature which will be independent of the generator desired current which may initially be low, due to the engine running only more slowly, or because the generator's own excitation current has not built up to its usual magnitude.
