A starting arrangement for an internal combustion engine 17 having an electric starter motor 10 and a normally closed electromagnetically operated decompression valve 19 inserted in the cylinder 18 of the engine 17 has the operating winding 24 controlled according to the position of a differentially wound relay 25 having two magnetically opposed operating windings 30, 31, the winding 30 of which is energized according to the supply voltage of a battery 14 and the other winding 31 energized according to the current taken by the starter motor 10, the arrangement being such that the decompression valve 19 is opened when the starter motor 10 takes a heavy current and is closed when the motor takes a reduced current. The arrangement may be such that the relay 25 may have normally closed or normally open contacts.
