Abstract

602,399. Starting prime movers. C.A.V., Ltd., and BEVIS, W. A. Oct. 15, 1945, No. 26895. [Class 38 (iv)] In an electric starting system for an internalcombustion engine of the kind wherein the starting motor a is supplied, under the control of a push-button d, from a battery b normally charged by an engine-driven generator h, an electromagnetic switch e-g so controls the battery-motor connections that the motor cannot be re-energized once the button d has been released and the engine is running. The switch comprises normally closed spring-loaded contacts e in series with the button and starting contactor coil c, the contacts being also under the control of opposed windings f, g which are energized, respectively, by the battery and generator. Starting from rest, closure of button d energizes contactor c and the engine is cranked by the motor. Winding f is also energized and assists the spring loading on contacts e. When the engine fires, winding g is energized by the generator, but contacts e remain closed as the effect of winding g is insufficient to overcome the combined action of winding f and the spring loading. Release of button d de-energizes winding f and contacts e now open under the action of winding g, thereby preventing further actuation of starting contactor c by the button until the engine has been again brought to rest.
