Abstract

415,727. Starting prime movers. ECLIPSE MACHINE CO., Elmira, New York, U.S.A. Nov. 29, 1932, No. 33767. Convention date, Nov. 30; 1931. [Class 38 (iv).] In starting apparatus for internal-combustion engines comprising a starting switch 5 electromagnetically closed by a circuit including means, such as 17, for opening the circuit when the engine starts, the opening means is energized on backfiring or when the engine rotates backward. Normally when the engine starts the coil 24 is energized through contact 36 of a switch 41 and a connection through the starting switch 5 to hold open the switch 17. When the engine rotates backwards pressure in the intake system operates a diaphragm 31 to cause the switch 41 to close a circuit for the coil 24 direct from the battery whereby the switch 5 is rendered inoperative. The time delay in the reclosure of the switch 17 due to its vibration after de-energization of the coil 24 is effective not only to delay restarting after cessation of forward rotation but similarly after cessation of backward rotation.
