Abstract

420,372. Starting prime movers. ECLIPSE MACHINE CO., Elmira, New York, U.S.A. May 27, 1933, No. 16366. Convention date, May 28, 1932. [Class 38 (iv)] In an electric starting system for internal-combustion engines in which the circuit of the starting motor is controlled by two pairs of contacts 12, 13 ; 14, 15, in parallel, one pair of contacts 14, 15 is retarded both in the opening and closing movement by retarding means 36. A starter switch 4 is controlled by a coil 8 energized on closure of a manual switch 9 and by the two sets of contacts 12, 13 ; 14, 15, the former set being normally open and the latter normally closed. Contacts 12, 13 are closed by the action of a coil 5 carrying motor current and contacts 14, 15 through a resilient lost motion connection 27, 28 by an armature 25 acted on by two coils, one 34 being a generator voltage coil and the other, 31, a motor voltage coil, the movement of the armature being retarded in both directions by a bellows 36 having an adjustable bleeder 39. Closure of switch 9 energizes the coil 8 through contacts 14, 15 and closes the switch 5. This energizes the motor S.M. and coil 5 which closes contacts 12, 13 before contacts 14, 15 are opened by the coil 31 energized by closure of switch 5. Decrease of motor current when the engine starts causes opening of the contacts 12, 13 by the residual E.M.F. of the motor on the coil 31 and the delay action of the bellows 36 maintains the contacts 14, 15 open until the generator voltage builds up sufficiently to hold the contacts open: During slow running of the engine, " rolling " or " kicking " effects thereof on the generator voltage are taken up by the lost motion connection 27, 28 and the bellows 36 and premature or undesirable closure of the starting switch 4 is thereby prevented.
