Abstract

442,131. Starting prime movers. ECLIPSE MACHINE CO., Elmira, New York, U.S.A. June 29, 1934, No. 19263. Convention date, June 30, 1933. [Class 38 (iv)] An electromagnetic switch 8, Fig. 2, in the circuit of the starting motor S.M. of an internalcombustion engine is actuated to cause starting of the engine when a driver-actuated engine control member 2 is moved to a predetermined position, the starting motor circuit remaining closed until the engine starts irrespective of movement of the member 2 within a predetermined range. Movement of the member 2 to bring the contact 32 of the rotary switch 29 into connection with the contact 23 causes closure of the starting switch 8 which remains closed during such subsequent movement of the member 2 as permits the contact 32 to make contact with the contact 30 so that a current of holding value flows to the coil 16 of the switch 8 through the resistance 28. When the engine starts the back E.M.F. of the generator G causes de-energization and opening of the switch 8. Opening of the switch 8 may be produced during cranking by complete release of the member 2 or by opening of the ignition switch 12. In another arrangement the contact 30 is dispensed with, the resistance 28 being connected between the contact 23 and the ignition switch. In this arrangement the starting switch can only be opened during cranking by opening the ignition switch. Fig. 3 shows an internal-combustion engine having the circuit of its starting motor SM controlled by an electromagnetic switch 44 which operates in response to movement of the control member 2 as described in relation to the switch 8 in Fig. 2. An additional switch 55, 56 is however provided in the circuit of the switch 44 and is actuated to break this circuit by the centrifugal spark advance mechanism 3 when the engine speed rises above cranking speed. The switch 44 may also be used to control a solenoid 40, 41 which when energized shifts the starter pinion into gear and the closes the main starting motor circuit by means of the contacts 38.
