420,303. Starting prime movers. STARTOMATIC CORPORATION, 1627, West Pico Street, Los Angeles, U.S.A. May 27, 1933, No. 15365. Convention date, May 28, 1932. [Class 38 (iv)] In an electric starting system for internalcombustion engines the coil 11 of the starter circuit switch 4 is controlled by the ignition switch 12 in series with contacts 14, 15 controlled by a pivoted armature 16 responsive to the motor cranking current by a coil 7 and to engine rotation by a diaphragm 27 in communication with a source of fluid pressure generated during engine rotation. The diaphragm may be controlled by engine suction or the pressure in the lubrication or cooling or the exhaust systems. The armature 16 is yieldably connected by a spring 23 to an arm 22 pivoted at 17 and connected by a spring 25 to the operating rod 24 of the diaphragm. In a modification the arm 22 is yieldably connected to a rod which is connected at each end to a diaphragm the separate diaphragms being subjected to fluid pressure generated in different parts of the engine during rotation. A band brake is provided on the shaft of the starting motor and is released by a cam operated by a lever connected to the starting switch 4 so that when the switch is closed the brake is released, but when the switch is opened the motor is brought quickly to rest.
