Abstract
414,351. Starting prime movers. ECLIPSE MACHINE CO., Elmira, New York, U.S.A. Oct. 31, 1932, No. 30513. Convention date, Oct. 31, 1931. [Class 38 (iv).] The circuit of an electric starting motor for an internal-combustion engine is interrupted when the engine back-fires or rotates backwards. The pressure set up in the intake operates a diaphragm associated with a switch which causes the starting motor circuit to open. Three arrangements are described. As shown in Fig. 1, the starting circuit is closed by the switch 7 energizing a coil which closes a switch 5 in the circuit of the motor S.M. In series with the switch 7 is a switch comprising contacts 27, 28, Fig. 2, which are closed under normal conditions. The contact 27 is carried by a diaphragm 21 in a casing 17 in communication with the intake manifold 19 and so arranged that a pressure in the intake will separate the contacts. When the pressure is dissipated the contacts 27, 28 reclose. In a modification the diaphragm is dished so that the contacts remain open after actuation until restored by manual means including a plunger projecting from the casing. In a further modification, the contacts remain apart after actuation until restored by suction in the manifold and a manually operated press switch is connected in parallel with them in order that the starter may be rendered operative.
