Abstract

438,787. Starting prime movers. ECLIPSE MACHINE CO., Elmira, New York, U.S.A. March 24, 1934, No. 9291. Convention date, March 25, 1933. [Class 38 (iv)] In a starting system for an internal-combustion engine 1. Fig. 1, means responsive to the engine intake vacuum cause the energization of the electromagnetic starting switch 5 to be reduced to a holding value during cranking and cause the switch 5 to be deenergized when the engine commences to run. Closure of the manual (ignition) switch 8 completes a control circuit through coil 11 and vacuum chamber 13 to earth closing switch 5 for starting motor SM which cranks engine 1 and produces a reduction of pressure in intake manifold 36 connected to chamber 13. As pressure falls diaphragm 19, Fig. 2, moves downwards and acts first to separate contact 25 on terminal 23 from contact 31 carried by spring 28 so throwing resistance 27 into the control circuit and reducing current through coil 11 to a hold-on value only. Downward movement of spring 28 is limited by stops 35 but such further reduction of pressure as is produced when the engine 1 starts causes further movement of diaphragm 19 against adjustable spring 45 so that contact 33 on diaphragm 1 moves away from contact 32 on spring 28 de-energizing coil 11 and breaking circuit to starting motor SM which latter cannot be again energized till contact is made again both between 25 and 31 and between 32 and 33. If engine stalls and vacuum fails there is slow leak past valve 38 and contacts 25, 31 and 32, 33 are reclosed, switch 5 being again fully energized after a time delay that ensures engine having come completely to rest.
