Abstract
440,640. Starting prime movers; actuation of switches. ECLIPSE MACHINE CO., Elmira, New York, U.S.A. April 28, 1934, No. 12886. Convention date, April 29, 1933. [Class 38 (iv)] [See also Group XXXVII] In starting of internal - combustion engines a mechanical connection between a control member of the engine and the actuator of the starter is disabled by devices independently responsive to self-running of the engine and backfire respectively. The accelerator pedal 4 operates through a nut 17 and pivoted latch 16 upon a shaft 19 which is connected through a member 26 to a switch 14 in the starter motor circuit so that when the accelerator pedal is depressed the starter motor is energized. A diaphragm device 36 sensitive to vacuum in the engine intake manifold is effective through a link 31 upon the latch 16 so as to break the connection between the pedal 4 and the shaft 19 when the engine is running. An electromagnet 39, 41 connected to the link 31 is effective when energized, to remove the latch 16 and is energized when a relay 53 is de-energized upon backfire of the engine. Relay 53 is controlled by normally closed contacts 64, 66 of a switch 55 which is operated from the engine intake manifold so that when a backfire occurs a piston 59 is raised and closes contacts 68 and 67. Contact 67 is on a bimetal strip 63 carrying contact 64 and contact 68 is grounded so that closure of contacts 68, 67 causes heating of the strip 63 so as to separate contacts 64, 66 to de-energize the relay 53. Reclosure takes place after a time lag. Contacts 64, 66 may be arranged. directly in the circuit of the electromagnet 39 which is then arranged so that it engages the latch 16 when energized.
