Abstract

414,113. Starting prime movers. ECLIPSE MACHINE CO., Elmira, New York, U.S.A. Jan. 28, 1933, No. 2753. Convention date, Jan. 29, 1932. [Class 38 (iv).] For starting internal-combustion engines, a common driver-operated control is provided for the carburetter choke valve, the starting motor and the ignition system. As shown, the common control comprises a rod 12 carrying an operating button and connected through a lost-motion connection 16 and a link 17 to the choke valve, which is closed or partly closed by movement of the rod 12 after the lost motion has been taken up. A switch arm 18 operated by collars 19, 21 on the rod 12 moves over a contact member 26 connected by a lead 28 to the ignition circuit and through a switch 31 and lead 32 to a solenoid 7 for closing a switch 4 in the circuit of the starting motor. When the engine is running, the circuit of the solenoid 7 is broken by engine suction acting on a piston 38 carrying a contact member 35 for engagement with contacts 33, 34. The solenoid circuit is also broken by the separation of contacts 45, 46 on actuation of the accelerator pedal 53. In a modification, the manual switch 31 is omitted and the starter control circuit is connected to a contact member adjacent to and shorter than the member 26, so that the ignition is switched on before the closing of the solenoid circuit.
