Abstract

450,581. Substituting machines in service. PETTERS, Ltd., Westland Works, and QUARRELL, A. P., 37, Princes Street, both in Yeovil, Somerset. May 9, 1935, Nos. 13730 and 15890. [Class 38 (iv)] [See also Group XXVII] An internal-combustion engine driving a generator and started automatically by compressed air on the failure of an electric supply system is controlled by a fuel valve and starting air valve both opened by springs or other biassing means and closed against the action of the springs when the main electric supply is on. The engine 2 may drive a generator or may be clutched to a machine 14 which is normally driven from the main supply 6. The fuel valve 11 and the starting air valve 4 are opened by springs when the closing relays 12, 5 are no longer energized from the mains 6. When the engine has allowed sufficient speed, a governor 7 closes the air valve 4. The compressed air reservoir 3 is refilled by a compressor 8 driven by an electric motor 9 under the control of a relay responsive to pressure in the reservoir. In a modification an electric generator driven by the engine is connected to distribution bus-bars by circuit breakers when the main supply fails. The valve 4 may supply air direct to the engine or to a separate air motor.
